NEW DELHI: Here are top 10 stocks that could be in focus today.

Future Retail: Future Retail Ltd is a step closer to a debt recast, with a group of 28 lenders approving a proposal for this and allowing it to extend the loan repayment period by up to two years, subject to the approval by a central bank committee, the company said.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance: Non-life insurer ICICI Lombard General Insurance has reported a 22.61% growth in net income to 345.68 crore for the March quarter, on the back of rise in gross direct premium income. It had posted a net profit of 281.93 crore in the year-ago period, the company said in a regulatory filing.

HDFC Bank: The lender has set aside 500 crore for compound interest waiver. India’s largest private lender HDFC Bank on Saturday said it has set aside 500 crore as provisions to cover the Supreme Court-directed compound interest refund to all borrowers during the March-August period.

The genetic mistakes that could shape our species

Back in 2018, CCR5 was mostly known for its ability to let the HIV virus into cells. Today, there’s an emerging consensus that it has a variety of functions – including in brain development, recovery from strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, the spread of certain cancers, and the outcome of infection with other pathogens.

“We don’t know how the babies’ lives are going to be affected,” says Saha, “how susceptible they would be to various types of infectious diseases, and what this means in terms of current and future pandemics.” Indeed, typical CCR5 proteins are thought to protect against a range of pathogens, such as malaria, West Nile Virus, the tick-borne encephalitis virus, yellow fever, and respiratory viruses such as the flu – suggesting that Jiankui may have robbed his subjects of a useful adaptation.

A potential fix

It’s not all bad news, however.

First up, it’s not certain that somatic cell editing would necessarily alter reproductive cells – it’s just a theoretical possibility. To find out if this is really happening, Saha and his team have been developing reporter systems in lab mice, which tag any altered cells with a fluorescent red protein and allow them to be found under the microscope. This means that it’s possible to see visually whether injecting a mouse with an editor that’s meant for, say, the brain, will end up affecting its sperm or eggs. “We’ve seen plenty of red cells in the brain,” says Saha. “Thus far, we haven’t seen anything in the reproductive organs, which is a good reassuring outcome.”

Secondly, not all somatic editing needs to happen inside the body. For some disorders, such as sickle cell disease, the affected tissue – in this case, red blood cells – can be extracted and treated outside the body, in a petri dish. This means that the editor only ever encounters the cells being targeted, and there is almost no risk of mutations being passed down the generations.

Finally, any potential risks might end up dictating who somatic cell editing is provided to, in order to limit them. For example, if it turns out there is a possibility of altering a person’s heritable DNA, they might only be offered to patients who are either past childbearing age or are nearing the end of their lives.

“In some cases, zero is probably not the threshold that’s needed to get into the clinic,” says Saha, explaining that there are likely to be plenty of people who would be willing to sacrifice ever having children in order to improve their quality of life. He believes the way forward is making sure that patients are well-informed of the risks before agreeing to such procedures.

An inter-generational experiment

But let’s say that we do end up with artificial mistakes in the human gene pool. Exactly how permanent could they become? Could new mutations created today still be washing around in 10,000 years, as future humans watch the red supergiant Antares’ scheduled explosion into a supernova as bright as the full Moon?

Discussions happening on the future of Colfax Elementary

GRANT PARISH, La. (KALB) – There are some discussions happening in Grant Parish about the future of Colfax Elementary School.

Between hurricanes and the recent winter storms, the school has received a significant amount of damage.

Last week, the Grant Parish School Board brought up the possibility of closing the school and re-zoning students to Verda, South Grant, and Pollock Elementary next school year. There are also proposed ideas on converting the current Colfax Elementary School building to a virtual or alternative education site.

Parents and members of the community have been holding their own meetings to talk about this, preparing for a public meeting that is being held on Tuesday, March 30 at the school. The meeting will give everyone a chance to publicly comment on the proposed plan and receive feedback.

Below is a list of items to be discussed at the March 30 meeting that will take place at 5 p.m. at Colfax Elementary.

How physics could prove God exists

I still believed in God (I am now an atheist) when I heard the following question at a seminar, first posed by Einstein, and was stunned by its elegance and depth: “If there is a God who created the entire universe and ALL of its laws of physics, does God follow God’s own laws? Or can God supersede his own laws, such as travelling faster than the speed of light and thus being able to be in two different places at the same time?” Could the answer help us prove whether or not God exists or is this where scientific empiricism and religious faith intersect, with NO true answer? David Frost, 67, Los Angeles.

I was in lockdown when I received this question and was instantly intrigued. It’s no wonder about the timing – tragic events, such as pandemics, often cause us to question the existence of God: if there is a merciful God, why is a catastrophe like this happening? The idea that God might be “bound” by the laws of physics – which also govern chemistry and biology and thus the limits of medical science – was an interesting one to explore.

If God wasn’t able to break the laws of physics, she arguably wouldn’t be as powerful as you’d expect a supreme being to be. But if she could, why haven’t we seen any evidence of the laws of physics ever being broken in the Universe?

To tackle the question, let’s break it down a bit. First, can God travel faster than light? Let’s just take the question at face value. Light travels at an approximate speed of 3 x 10 to the power of 5 kilometres every second, or 186,000 miles per second (299,500km/s). We learn at school that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light – not even the USS Enterprise in Star Trek when its dilithium crystals are set to max.

But is it true? A few years ago, a group of physicists posited that particles called tachyons travelled above light speed. Fortunately, their existence as real particles is deemed highly unlikely. If they did exist, they would have an imaginary mass and the fabric of space and time would become distorted – leading to violations of causality (and possibly a headache for God).

It seems, so far, that no object has been observed that can travel faster than the speed of light. This in itself does not say anything at all about God. It merely reinforces the knowledge that light travels very fast indeed.

Can Ireland return to its former wilderness?

But returning large carnivores to the wild in Ireland is a divisive idea. The Green Party in the Republic of Ireland has called for wolves to be reintroduced after 250 years of absence, though there are no official plans to do so yet. It’s possible that wolf reintroduction could help in the fight against climate change. Perhaps through controlling non-native deer populations, the grazing of forested and mountainous areas would reduce. That in turn might increase levels of vegetation and the amount of stored carbon, for example.

But no-one really knows whether this benefit would arise and some say bringing wolves back could be dangerous for people and livestock. Ireland, after all, does not have a vast expanse of wilderness akin to the Yellowstone National Park in the US, where conservationists successfully reintroduced wolves in 1995.

And yet for some environmentalists in Ireland, there’s no better topic of discussion.

“If I were to focus my efforts on one thing, I would talk about wolves,” says Pádraic Fogarty, author and campaign officer for the Irish Wildlife Trust. He argues it’s important not to shy away from tricky conversations – and he thinks the very notion of wolf reintroduction gets people thinking about restoring biodiversity, generally.

But there are other, less emotive species, that Fogarty thinks could be reintroduced. These include the corn bunting, a small light brown and rather plump-looking bird, and sturgeon, a large river-dwelling fish that has been extinct in Ireland since 1967.

However, as Neil Reid at Queen’s University Belfast points out, it’s not always clear what groundwork is needed to ensure reintroduction programmes will go to plan. In 2001, golden eagles were brought back to Ireland in County Donegal’s Glenveagh National Park. Although the birds have sustained a population there ever since, their numbers have not grown as expected.

“It was predicted that by now we should have 50 to 60 pairs,” says Reid. “We are well short of that.” There are, in fact, just 25 known pairs. Reid says surveys by his student have found that there is not enough prey for the eagles in the area, such as hares and red grouse. That might be because the park is being over-grazed by deer and sheep, suggests Reid.

This is why habitat management is so important for any rewilding effort. Fogarty has visited Daltun’s reinvigorated forest in County Cork and describes it as “amazing”. He says that, on the road to species reintroductions, conservationists could start by following this example of preparing suitable habitats, encouraging fragmented patches of native forest, peatland and wetland around Ireland to expand.

The vast majority of the trees that do exist in Ireland today, explains Fogarty, are actually in non-native commercial plots, such as dense pine tree plantations. “Which is mostly very low biodiversity,” he says, adding that he would like to see 30% to 40% of the island carpeted in native forest or wetland.

Future of Lynchburg education task force uncertain amid COVID-19 pandemic | Education

The task force began its work in August 2019 and last met Jan. 30 to assess where each group was with their work. At that time, the group was set to deliver a progress report to the city in April and make its final recommendations on what changes should be made in LCS in November 2020. 

But, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the task force and subcommittees canceled all their meetings beginning in March. 

Atul Gupta, a member of the Lynchburg City School Board, said the direction of the task force may need to change.

“The needs have changed,” Gupta said. “Online education is in the forefront… all these needs have changed since we started this task force.”

LCS Superintendent Crystal Edwards said collaboration with the members of the task force and their combined experience with education and the city are needed now more than ever. 

“We’re in the middle of a pandemic, and guess what, y’all? Our kids need us,” Edwards said. “So, I think we can do some good work together, putting all the best minds together as we move forward.”

Rachel Gagen, task force member and parent in the division, said she thinks a plan should be made sooner rather than later. 

“Unfortunately, in many ways, time is our enemy,” Gagen said. “These kids who are in kindergarten right now, for the most part, this is their only kindergarten year and if we don’t start soon making a 10-year plan or a five-year plan for them, I fear for their high school years.”
