Kingston Technology New Touch Screen Drive Offers Security

In days gone by, a spy like James Bond would have to smuggle top-secret information using a microdot hidden in a cigarette or something similar. Now we live in a digital age, but we still have information that’s incredibly valuable and sensitive that needs to be kept safe from prying eyes.

If James Bond were smuggling secrets today, he’d probably turn to Kingston Technology

for one of the company’s latest encrypted storage devices. The IronKey Vault Privacy 80 External SSD (VP80ES) is Kingston Technology first innovative OS-independent external SSD with a touchscreen and hardware encryption for keeping top-secret data secure.

Using the new IronKey VP80ES is as simple as unlocking a smartphone and it even uses simple drag-and-drop file transfers. With its intuitive color touchscreen and XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, the VP80ES is FIPS 197-certified and can protect sensitive data while also being simple to use. With read and write speeds of up to 250MB/s, this little drive is no slouch when it comes to shifting large amounts of data.

The new drive can withstand what’s known as Brute Force attacks and BadUSB. This is thanks to its digitally signed firmware for users whether that’s an SMB or a freelance content creator working from home. Kingston Technology claims the military-grade security used in the VP80ES makes it a far safer choice than relying on the internet or the Cloud for securing important company information, documents and videos. Unlike many other secure drives, the Kingston Technology IronKey Vault Privacy 80 External SSD is easy to open … [+] and use despite being FIPS 197-certified.

Along with its ease of use and having the very best hardware encryption, the VP80ES has other features to keep data safe. These features include a multi-password option that can be set separately for both the admin and the end-user using either a PIN or a passphrase with configurable password rules.

The drives admin option offers the choice between using a numeric PIN or a memorable passphrase. There are configurable password rules and extended security options like a maximum number of shared password attempts, minimum password length of 6-64 characters, alphanumeric password rules, auto-timeout to lock drive, randomized touchscreen layout and secure erasure for maximum protection of important files.

The Admin-level password can be used to restore data and access the data should the end-user forget their password. For added peace of mind, the VP80ES’ Brute Force attack protection can crypto-erase the drive if either the Admin or User passwords are entered incorrectly 15 times in a row.

Of course, having watertight security is not much good if the person using the device keeps forgetting their password. The VP80ES allows the password to include ‘space’ characters so the passwords can be easier to remember, such as a list of words, a memorable quote or even the lyrics from a favorite song. And instead of a password, a PIN pad can be used to unlock VP80ES, just like a regular smartphone. To reduce the number of failed login attempts and frustration, the user can tap on the “eye” button to view the characters of the password as they are being entered.

The Kingston Technology IronKey VP80ES is supplied with a neoprene travel case as well as two USB 3.2 Gen 1 adapter cables for connection to USB-C or USB-A devices, making it ideal for use on the move when secured data needs to be physically relocated.

Oscar Escayola Kaloudis is Kingston Technology flash business manager for European and Middle East markets. He adds: “As more and more people continue to work from home and outside of company firewalls, we want to provide higher capacity options of user-friendly military-grade security for small and medium businesses to complement our existing encrypted USB drives. IronKey Vault Privacy 80ES does just that. Between the color touchscreen, the myriad security features, and its small form factor, users can truly control their data in their own hands.”
