Temperature Outlook for January 2020.

December 2020 Climate Review


CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – As we start the new month of January, the First Alert Storm Team went back and looked at the weather that impacted eastern Iowa in December of 2020.

The month started off fairly warm with a few days in the 40s and Cedar Rapids ended up with 7 days in the 40-degree range and 3 days in the 50s. Overall, the average high temperature for the month of December was 35.1 degrees, which was around 3.3 degrees above the normal high for December. Our average low for the month was also above normal.

Two big snowfall events in Cedar Rapids ended our snowfall total at 13.5″ with a few trace amount reports. That’s 5.7″ above the normal amount of snowfall we see in the month of December.

  • Precipitation: 1.68″
  • Snowfall: 13.5″

Dubuque

  • Average High: 34.1°
  • Average Low: 18.5°
  • Precipitation: 2.66″
  • Snowfall: 18.0″

Iowa City

  • Average High: 37.2°
  • Average Low: 20.1°
  • Precipitation: 2.17″
  • Snowfall: 13.0″

Waterloo

  • Average High: 36.6°
  • Average Low: 16.9°
  • Precipitation: 1.01″
  • Snowfall: 10.2″

Looking ahead to January, the Climate Prediction Center is showing a higher chance of seeing above normal temperatures and above normal values for precipitation.

Average highs through January stay in the upper 20s, while lows remain in the low teens. We normally see around 6″ of snow through January as well.
